The reading culture of a child is greatly determined by the foundation a guardian or parent has set up for a child. In today’s culture, most children have grown up watching lots of television and playing video games as compared to reading books and journals.

Caregivers should input the reading culture by reading to children even at an early age. Reading to young ones at infancy does not only form a bond between the parent and the child but also creates interest within the child for them to read. If a child does not have this will to read it could hinder their ability to be able to learn how to read. You can spend at least fifteen to twenty minutes reading with your child.

Lullabies, board books, cloth books, songbooks, rhyming books, short story books, alphabet books, and picture books are some of the introductory written materials that one uses when nurturing the reading culture of his/her child.

Let the young learner read the book, and ask questions on what they have read about. Allowing the pupils to read by themselves encourages them to interact with the book and the characters enabling them to understand more about the book and keep them thirsting to read more articles and journals. Guardians and parents should encourage the young readers to ask questions regarding what they don’t understand in the book.

Visiting children libraries also make children develop a reading culture for them to want to know how to read, some libraries have children play areas where they get a storyteller to read books for them and also create a sense of interest to read more about the books.

Be a good example and let your child see you reading. At the very early stages of life children imitate what they see the adults doing; by seeing you reading they will also be prompted to pick a book and get to reading, rather than watching television and playing video games.

Decorating your child’s room with letters and books also helps then develop a reading culture as they want to know more about their surroundings. They can also start showing interest by asking you to read the books for them as bedtime stories.

Make reading fun by inventing games that are derived from the books they have read. The games help them to want to read more books and be very keen while reading. The game also aids in the memorization of certain words. Encourage the child to read out loud as this helps with their pronunciations of words. Ask the child to form sentences so as to improve his/her grammar.

Get your children interesting books that make reading fun by making artwork in form of letters to form words. Some parents also reward their children when they finish a book or when they learn new vocabulary; the bribes help the children to aim at learning new things and finishing articles on time. Children also get motivated if an adult relates the environment with what they are reading interests them to learn more.

Books encourage children to be creative and they end up writing their own books with characters that are interesting. They perform well in languages as they easily learn the phonetics of a language faster and easier. The children have also great spelling as the words are familiar to them as compared to their peers who do not have a reading culture.

One can use reading cards to help with the words that they find difficult pronounce, spell and hard to memorize. Reading boosts a child’s academic performance.
