People and ideas go hand in hand. With minds that have millions of neurons at work, it is no surprise that men (and women) have made some of the world’s greatest creations. We are innovative human beings. A thought is a continuous process of the mind. The mind never sleeps. Even when we close our eyes and shut down for the day, our mind is working to help us sleep and even then, in our dreams we get visions and vivid ideas.

Intellectual property can be a bone of contention when it comes to business. It sours friendships and breaks up business. People have gone to court to fight for their intellectual property rights time and again. These cases drag out in court and millions. The time and effort put into these cases by both parties are exhausting. When doing a paper on intellectual property rights, you cannot lack material. As people have been trying to con and defame each other out of ideas for the longest time. The hardest part is always proving who said what and who the intellectual rights belong to.

With every research paper, knowledge is key. Narrow done your area and choose the topic that interests you most. This makes it easier when doing research because the reading is enjoyable. It will definitely require going through court cases. Not only in your country of birth but globally, because the proof is also required in the paper. Showing similarities, the world over is always beneficial, but at the end of the end of applying it to the laws of your country is what matters most.

So, what does intellectual property rights entail?

Intellectual property (IP) has been described as a category of property that includes intangible creations of the human intellect and primarily encompasses copyrights, patents, and trademarks. It also includes other types of rights, such as trade secrets, publicity rights, moral rights, and rights against unfair competition. Trade secrets include the secret recipe of coca cola and what grandma puts in her delicious barbeque sauce. This we are more familiar with. Rights against unfair competition include naming your business similarly to another one, in the same industry. Like Lolex watches in comparison to Rolex watches.

The most prevalent intellectual property includes;

• Copyrights, which covers the protection of the original ideas themselves alone, and not the underlying ideas. • Patents are a set of exclusive rights granted to an inventor by a sovereign state or intergovernmental organization for a limited period of time, to be revealed to the public in detailed exposure. A patent should always bring about a solution to a technological problem.

• Trademarks refer to the logo used to promote or brand goods. It is further described as a recognizable insignia, phrase or symbol that denotes a specific product or service and legally differentiates it from all other products. For example, Finger-Lickin' good, by KFC

• Trade Secrets, generally speaking, apply to any confidential business information which provides an enterprise a competitive edge. Technically speaking it is a formula, practice, process, design, instrument, pattern, commercial method, or compilation of information not well known. A guarded secret.

While writing your research paper, consider adding how one acquires a patent in your research paper. For one, you will need to hire a lawyer. You will also need to understand what patents protect and go through the required processes. Such as to file a provisional application, then conduct patent searches. This is to ensure that a similar invention does not already exist. Once you have done this exhaustively, draft your non-provisional application. File it and work with the patent examiner to look through your case. Finally, maintain your patent and stay on your toes.

Ask your lawyer all manner of relevant questions as you build a strong case for your patent. It is worthy to note, there may be upheaval and pushback to get a patent. You must reflect all of the above and more.
