The purpose of a critique analysis is examining written work such as an article to analyze its effectiveness in making a point or an argument. You can also critique films and modern works. You look at the rhetorical appeal by the author but also remember to focus on overall effectiveness and the ability of the full work.

These steps will help you to write the best critique analysis.

1. Identify the thesis

Identify what the supporting an opposing argument by the author. A thesis for an academic article is easier to find. For creative or fiction work, the first step is to analyze what the owner was trying to prove. Think about the context of the argument and why he felt it was necessary to argue it. Your critique analysis should show whether the author offers a solution to the problems in the thesis and if it is realistic.

2. Identify the main ideas that need analyzing

Capture the main ideas in the work so that you can analyze the structure comprehensively. These ideas are in the topic sentences of paragraphs and section in academic articles. For painting or fiction, you have to check the arguments by the author in the thesis.

Choose the noteworthy areas for analysis from expandable observations. You mainly focus on the effectiveness of the author in appealing to logos, ethos, and pathos. Look at 2 or 3 areas that apply most to the work. You can also focus on the area that seems stronger.

Another alternative is to look at overall ability by the author in making a point. You can rate these points in separate paragraphs:

  • Quality of research
  • How the author uses the structure and its impact on the work
  • Other outstanding matters

3. Identify controversies around the topic

When a topic is a disputable matter, it is important to include information on both sides of the issue then explain how succeeded or failed to argue against it. It is especially significant when the article mentions issues from the opposing side directly. Mention the conflicting opinions even where the author avoids the mention. You should explain why the topic is relevant to let the readers know why they should care. Convince them that this is a relevant issue. An excellent article should have a subject with implications for the contemporary age. It is relevant if the author is a famous writer or thinker.

4. Evaluate if the author communicates the message well

From a reader’s perspective, figure out if the author was appealing. Consider whether it made you have an emotional response such as anger or happiness. Ask yourself the reason for your reaction and if the author used logic or reasons that changed your mind.

You should decide whether the author is credible or not and the reasons for your decision.

5. Summary and conclusion

You should summarize the key points mentioned by the author of the leading article in its defense close to the end of your critique. Provide few brief examples. Your summary should not exceed a third of the critique's body. You may also briefly describe text organization.

Restate your overall opinion or thesis in the conclusion. An equal space is what you should use to present a brief recommendation on how to improve the analyzed work. The conclusion should not exceed 10% percent of the paper. The best critique analysis is one that balances positive and negative. Start with the negatives if it has more of positive elements or positive if the negative is more. When negative and positive factors are equal, you can mix them in one paragraph that begins with the positives.

A critique uses an academic tone. Avoid phrases with personal tones such as "in my opinion." You will weaken the academic sense by identifying your opinion.
