In writing a good essay, one must express thoughts and emotions when conveying the message. Essay writing is an art where you have to make things up. The writing is not strictly academic or technical, but you still must feed the audience with useful information. Essay writing must therefore be original yet self-expressive. It can also be entertaining as it does not present facts in straightforward manner like a news article.

When you are writing, start by creating a set up. Here you establish characters that inhabit in certain world. These characters should be related to each other to carry the story up to end. Let the first act be to create some dramatic occurrence to introduce the story. For a good essay, you should also have turning point that sets pace for rest of the piece. It is also vital to have set goals of what you want to achieve: -

  • Is it to pass knowledge to the readers?
  • Persuade readers to embark on a certain activity or,
  • Simply entertain them.

When writing, you must seek the attention of the reader in a powerful way. Starting with a flashback is an excellent way to get attention. It allows you to write in ways that disrupt the chronology of events, takes your reader directly to the action for the story to start with excitement. For instance, if you are writing about kidnapping, you can start by telling about events prior to an incident in one or several flashbacks to skip a slow build up. This arouses the interest of the reader to find out how detectives will uncover the perpetrators. Flashback is a good principle to apply but it should be for subjects where it applies easily. After starting, it is important to keep the reader engaged. Use interesting details about characters, setting and location. Write about the academic side of the paper but mix that with interesting details so that the information is not just about dry facts. This style applies well for humanities subjects although you should cut down on its use for sciences. If for instance you are writing about a country, you can introduce interesting information about the lifestyle of its past rulers.

A good essay does not require facts only, but also the need to answer the interesting questions. Instructors who set the paper usually look at how well students can respond to their questions. You can afford to be unpredictable and use unusual structures for an essay paper but answer the main and subsequent questions in a straightforward way. It is also good to know that your instructors will be reading many essays from others therefore you have to keep them engaged. One should therefore make sure that it is well written, brief and to the point.

If you keep your ears open, you will get unusual phrases and great dialogue from people you meet at cafes, train or pathways. You can also be inspired to write by things you see as you move. Note down anything that you can use to develop your writing then sit down when you are relaxed and put it on paper.

Lastly, It is better to focus on writing, do not let the fear of making a mistake slow you down. Even the most popular writers must revise their work because it is rare to write everything perfectly the first time. After completing your draft, leave it for some time preferably several days and revise when your mind is fresh. It also helps to let someone else read and give unbiased feedback.
